Arbroath Vics completed their fixtures in section 2 of the D. J. Laing League Cup on Saturday, when Forfar West End were the visitors to Ogilvy Park. Vics fielded the same starting eleven that took to the field against Kirrie Thistle the previous week, knowing that at least a point would see them advance to the semi-final stage at the expense of their Super League opponents. Needing a win to top the section, West End started the match at a high tempo and after six minutes had swept into the lead. Scott Johnston cut into the box from the left, where he was tripped by David McLeish and GRANT LAWSON slotted home from the resultant penalty kick. Vics responded in positive fashion and when Gavin Norrie sent a ball forward from defence, Garry Warren got on the end of it to drive in a shot, which was blocked for a corner by Craig Logan. Soon after, David McLeish sent a loose ball flying inches wide of the post. The pressure was rewarded when Vics equalised in the 12th minute. Matty Johnston and Mark Fotheringham worked the ball through the West End defence for SCOTT PEARSON, who got a touch to it before Stephen Vanderdeyl could reach, and he rolled it beyond the keeper from 14 yards. Vics had two decent shouts for penalty kicks waved aside by the referee in the space of a minute, when firstly Scott Pearson went down under the challenge of Graeme Gibb and then a Kris McWalter cross struck the hand of Lindsay Stewart. |
